OCTOBER 8, 2024 UPDATE

The following is an update sent by EPCOR to residents of the Glastonbury neighbourhood.

For more information, contact EPCORprojects@epcor.com or call 780-412-4200.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Invasive goldfish removed from Keswick in 2021

EPCOR owns and operates the drainage system in Edmonton which includes the stormwater collection system. Water from stormwater management facilities eventually flows from the system into local waterways including the North Saskatchewan River.

EPCOR is required by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas to eradicate invasive fish species from our stormwater system to prevent them from reaching other water bodies and overwhelming native species.

Investigations have shown that goldfish have become established in the Glastonbury 4 & 5 stormwater facilities. Action is required to stop the spread and prevent the migration of goldfish to the North Saskatchewan River.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Managing the invasive goldfish populations in Glastonbury 4 & 5 stormwater management facilities is required. EPCOR will be communicating in the future about updates to the plan to eradicate invasive fish from these facilities.

To prevent goldfish from reaching the North Saskatchewan River in the interim, the water levels in the Glastonbury 4 & 5 facilities will be lowered by a minimum of three metres. Lowering the water level reduces the risk that the facility will release water into the downstream stormwater system.

Pumping to reduce water levels will start on approximately October 15, 2024 and is expected to take up to two weeks to complete. Intermittent pumping may continue after to maintain low water depth in the facilities.

With reduced water levels, unstable ground will be exposed in these facilities. To protect public safety, the current fenced area will remain fenced off until the invasive species removal is completed and water levels are returned to normal.

MAP OF FACILITIES

SCHEDULE

Glastonbury 4 and 5 facilities are currently fenced off and will remain fenced off until invasive species removal is complete. Lowering of the water will begin on approximately October 15, 2024.

SAFETY

The stormwater management facilities will be fenced off and marked as restricted areas. In areas that cannot be temporarily fenced, signage will be posted to advise the public to keep their distance from the facility.

We will take every precaution to ensure public safety. Please keep a safe distance from the area.
